NGOs in the EEA Grants
Strengthening civil society and improving the capacity of nongovernmental organisations are given special attention under the EEA Grants, with NGO funds planned in twelve of the beneficiary states. Civil society organisations across the beneficiary states and in the donor states have eagerly anticipated this boost to civil society development in Central and Southern Europe, which will provide more than €70 million to their cause through the NGO Funds, with additional opportunities under the open calls.

Tailored grants
The NGO Funds are an additional form of grant assistance adapted to the specific needs of NGOs. These typically include a smaller project size than the 250,000 minimum limit for grant assistance through individual projects, independence from government structures, and simplified application procedures.  To facilitate this, the NGO fund will be set up in the beneficiary state and operated by a suitable intermediary with strong ties to the NGO community. Further information can be found in the NGO Grants Guideline.

Operational NGO Funds
The past year has already seen a mushrooming of NGO funds, and the assistance channelled into the NGO sector in the beneficiary states have exceeded €70 million. NGO Funds are now established in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia, with additional funds in the pipeline in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Portugal and Romania.
