Iceland

Iceland has been a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) since its inception in 1994, and has contributed to greater social cohesion in Europe ever since.

Iceland is a progressive European country with a high standard of living, and has consistently ranked high on the UN Human Development Index. The country became a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in 1970, the EEA in 1994 and Schengen in 1996. Since joining the EEA, the country has enjoyed access to the EUs internal market, along with Liechtenstein and Norway.

The support through the EEA Grants contributes significantly to the overall aim of reducing social and economic disparities within the European Economic Area. In addition, the funding represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the beneficiary states. Among the projects under the grants, five include partners in Iceland, benefiting participants on both sides.
